The City of Ouray

Ouray is the quintessential mountain town, population 850 people (150 mule deer, 24 Pronghorn sheep, 2 mountain lions, and 6 black bear, more or less), elevation 7800 ft, no traffic lights in town, only one the county. Ouray sits on the floor of a small box canyon with steep walls to 10,000 ft. Hiking in the Ouray area typically involves 1,000 ft vertical gain for every mile hiked.
The town of Ouray is an outdoor adventure sports community. For years it has been popular among the hiking, backpacking, ice climbing, and 4WD communities. Recent developments are extensive rock climbing, canyoning, and there are plans to build a Via Ferratta soon. The locals all support these activities and welcome canyoneering as another outdoor adventure sport.
Grocery Stores & Markets:
Ouray has one small market to purchase food. Larger grocery stores are available in Montrose, Colorado or Durango, Colorado on the way into town. Ouray has two wine and spirits stores, two microbreweries, one distillery, all on Main Street
.
Restaurants:
Ouray has several restaurants along Main Street. Just 15-20 minutes north of Ouray, Ridgway also offers more dining opportunities.
